Daniel R. Miller

From 1973 until the firm of Jorden and White was founded in Meadville in1981, I had the honor and privilege of being a partner with Daniel L. R. Miller in the Erie Law Firm of McClure, Dart, Miller, Kelleher & White.

His passing leaves a great void in my heart, and I am sure in the hearts of the thousands of people whose lives have been touched by Dan Miller in his long and exemplary legal career.

Dan graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. in 1951 and Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University in 1955. Following his graduation from the University of Michigan Law School in 1958 he fulfilled his active duty requirements with the Army in Military Intelligence at the Pentagon. He then retired from the United States Army as a Captain and returned to Erie. After serving briefly as an Erie County Assistant District Attorney, he co-founded the law firm of McClure and Miller where he practiced until his death. A highlight of his legal practice came when he successfully argued an important securities law case, 'Marine Bank vs. Weaver' before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was also a Past-President of the Erie County Bar Association and the Estate Planning Council of Erie. In addition to his law practice, he served as a Trustee of the Jura Trust, Director of Lord Corporation, Jura Corporation, Uniflow Mfg. Corporation; Chairman of Kondu Corporation and as Treasurer and a Director of Penn Attorneys Title Insurance Company. Atty. Miller was deeply involved in the Erie community and served at various times as President of Hamot Health Systems, Inc. and Springhill-Forestview Senior Living Community. He was an active member of Wayside Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and also served on the Board of Trustees of the Erie Community Foundation, Erie Arts Endowment, the Visiting Nurses Association, SafeNet Endowment and the Erie Cemetery Association. In 2005 Hamot Hospital established the Daniel L.R. Miller Award for Excellence in Estate Planning in his honor. I consider myself most fortunate to have had a friend, once in life, as wonderful as Attorney Dan Miller.
