MOORELAND - Brad and Mariellen Miller's "home on the range where the buffalo roam" is the family farm near Mooreland.Fifty-seven bison, counting the twin calves born last weekend, feed on grass pastures at Miller Bison Farms.

The Millers live in the old farmhouse, which was built around 1870, Brad guesses.

"The farm has been in my family 100 years, since my great-grandparents Benjamin and Lizzie Hawkins bought the property in 1904.Five generations of our family have lived on this farm," Brad said."My mother grew up here."

Over the years, there were several houses on the farm. The remaining old homestead that the Millers live in was remodeled in the 1920s and doesn't much resemble the original, Brad noted. They are doing some remodeling now, turning a downstairs bedroom into another bathroom

"We move them to a different pasture every three days," Brad said.
    ...
Bison will even chase a coyote," Brad said.

"They're not hard to get along with, as long as you keep them happy with good pasture," he added."A bison can jump five-and-a-half to six feet from standing still; they can run 35 miles an hour and turn on a dime."

Mariellen said they've always been interested in exotic animals and go to exotic animal auctions."Six years ago, we found an Amish man who was moving to Indiana and had some bison.Brad went to see him and came home with four bison."

Like many farmers today, the Millers also have full-time jobs.Brad is a test technician at Delco-Remy in Anderson, and Mariellen works in clinical information services at Henry County Memorial Hospital.Their eldest son, Daniel, a partner on the farm, works in Hagarstown.
    ...
At the Minnetrista Farmers Market, Brad and Mariellen offered samples of their bison salami.
    ...
The animals are not fed grain, growth hormones or antibiotics, according to Brad Miller.
