Brad Miller, director of the Terre Haute Transit Utility, said the added services "are taking transit to a new era."

ISU students and the public will have extended hours to go to the mall or other shopping areas or to get to and from work.

"This broadens everyone's ridership," Miller said."We're excited about it.We hope everybody uses it."

The city bus service should benefit from increased ridership, which in turn would mean increased state funding, Miller said.

The ISU Campus Shuttle Route runs through campus from 6:15 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. It starts and ends at the Transfer Center, at Fifth Street and Wabash Avenue, where it leaves every half hour - at 15 minutes and 45 minutes after the hour.

Right now, there are no designated bus stops for the campus shuttle, Miller said.

"Drivers are looking for [students] everywhere," he said - at street corners, in front of buildings or at a parking lot.

"We don't know where they will congregate," Miller said.Once that's better known, the bus service will have designated stops on the shuttle route, he said.

"On a nice day, we probably won't pick up anyone," Miller said.

Brad Miller, director of the Transit Utility, said an agreement reached earlier this year between the city and Indiana State University would allow for extended bus service.

The city, starting Oct. 1, will have three buses serving three routes for extended hours, which will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

The extended hour routes would run from downtown and the ISU campus north to Plaza North; south on Seventh Street to Honey Creek Mall and Wal-Mart; and an east Wabash Avenue route that goes through downtown.

The city will continue to use all of its 14 buses on nine routes for its current service of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, Miller said.

To help pay for the service, ISU trustees earlier this year passed a new $15 per semester transportation fee that would be assessed to students enrolled in six or more credit hours. The city also will receive matching federal funds to provide the service, Miller said.

The city bus service would benefit from the increased ridership, which in turn would mean increased state funding, said Brad Miller, director of the Terre Haute Transit Utility.

A proposed contract is being reviewed by ISU, Miller said.Once that contract is hammered out, the city Board of Works will have to approve it.

At that point, he believes it would take at least 3 to 31,2 months to make the proposal reality."It will require hiring 11 employees and revamping routes. That can't be done overnight," Miller said.

He hopes the campus shuttle and extended routes could begin around September.

As originally proposed, ISU Campus Shuttle Route would run through campus and stop at several locations from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The proposal also calls for three modified, extended city bus routes that would run 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

The modified routes would go north to Plaza North; south on Seventh Street to Honey Creek Mall and Wal-Mart; and an east Wabash Avenue route that goes through downtown. The entire community would benefit from the extended hours, Miller has said.
    ...
The student fees would cover about half the expanded service, Miller has said.About half the cost would be picked up by the federal government.

Brad Miller, Terre Haute transportation director, said, "Streets are doing as well as can be expected."

Miller expected plowing to cease by 4 p.m. Wednesday and pick up again at 7 a.m. today, he said.

"We've worked around the clock since Monday night at nine," Miller said."Of course it was hard keeping up [Monday] because as soon as we picked it up, Mother Nature put it back down."

Although most of the snow the sun melted was expected to freeze because of Wednesday night's frigid temperatures, Miller said it wouldn't improve much if his crews stayed out any later.

"Once you reach around 15 degrees, salt doesn't work," he said.

While they'll be working hard on the main roads, he said they rarely get to plow the side streets.

"There's 343 miles of streets in Terre Haute and we do not have the resources nor the manpower to plow each and every street," he said.

Also, by the time they are done plowing the main streets, Miller said most of the side streets have been driven on so much the snow is packed down and becomes ice. There's no way to plow ice, he said.

They plan to put sand and salt down on the side streets and wait for the snow and ice to melt away, he said.

"It would be nice if we could plow every street in town," Miller said.

"I'd advise drivers to pay attention to road conditions and not get into a big hurry," said Brad Miller, transportation director with the Terre Haute Street Department. The department began "up-fitting" their trucks from leaf service to snow removal service this week, he said.

Drivers should stick to main roads and give themselves extra time in snowy conditions, the ISP's Watts said.He also recommends cars be equipped with jumper cables, good wiper blades and wiper fluid, a blanket, some light snacks, a fully charged cell phone and a full tank of fuel.
