"In almost every respect ATSDR failed to fulfill its mission to protect the public from exposure to formaldehyde at levels known to cause ill-health effects," said Subcommittee Chairman Brad Miller (D-NC), who blamed a "collapse of senior management and leadership."

At the hearing, it became clear that a leading government expert on formaldehyde had tried to alert his superiors about the toxicity levels of the government trailers in New Orleans, but was repeatedly ignored. Ultimately, he was demoted. Today his superiors said they should have followed his advice, but they did not address why they "reassigned" him to a new position.

Brad Miller Government Reform Public Safety & Oversight

Democratic US Rep. Brad Miller, NC-13, wants to stop the Bush Administration's pattern of replacing sound science and expert knowledge with political judgments that benefit corporate special interests.

As the chairman of the House Science and Technology subcommittee, Miller is fighting the Bush Administration's attempt to decide who will have the most influence over writing rules that protect the health and safety of our citizens.

    > Pacers await word on Brad Miller

    07/23/2003

    Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Pacers could soon learn whether free-agent center Brad Miller will leave the team, possibly to join Utah or Denver.

"We'll know more today," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said Tuesday."He's got offers.I don't know if he's signed anything yet."

A message was left Tuesday at the office of Miller's agent, Mark Bartelstein.

Miller, a 7-footer, is considered the top free-agent center still available.

Newspapers in Salt Lake City and Denver - Miller visited both cities last weekend - have reported that the center has six-year contract offers of $55 million from the Jazz and $49 million from the Nuggets. He made $5.3 million last season with the Pacers.

Indiana, which last week resigned free-agent forward Jermaine O'Neal to a seven-year contract worth more than $120 million, is only about $7 million short of the NBA's luxury tax threshold.Besides Brad Miller, the Pacers also are working to resign Reggie Miller.

Thomas said he believed the Pacers were doing what they could to persuade Miller to stay.

"Clearly we don't want to lose Brad, but that's the system we're under if it happens," Thomas said.

Pacers chief executive Donnie Walsh said Monday he had little hope of retaining Miller.
    ...
"(Miller) is not coming to us saying, 'I really want to be there, so let's work it out.' He's negotiating with us like anybody else."

Miller met with Jazz officials Thursday and Friday in Salt Lake City, and later flew to Denver with Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe for further talks.

Miller, who went undrafted out of Purdue, averaged 13.1 points and 8.3 rebounds and made his first All-Star appearance last season. He was acquired in February 2002 from the Chicago Bulls in a seven-player deal.
