That was the position Prudence Miles of Oregon State University's office of affirmative action and equal opportunity found herself in earlier this year when she was invited to participate as a citizen representative in the governor's screening process to fill the Benton County position.

As the only non-attorney on the committee, Miles said, she started by asking people who work in the criminal justice system about what qualities a judge should have.

"What we really are needing in Benton County is someone who is organized, gets things done and doesn't delay," Miles said.

People told her the new judge would need to be able to address disputes between attorneys and return decisions in a prompt manner.By interviewing each of the candidates, Deputy District Attorney Dan Armstrong, Benton County Counsel Vance Croney, Connell and Harding, Miles said she realized that there were four "good quality candidates."

She didn't know Connell before the interview process, but he was the candidate who stood out.

"I was impressed with his energy, enthusiasm and his desire for the position and his understanding that this was going to be a tough job," Miles said.

Prudence Miles of the Community Alliance for Diversity said her organization provides a resource for people who may have been discriminated against at work or by businesses, rental agencies or landlords.

"It's really important to have somebody locally they can sit down and talk with," Miles said."It's real intimidating."

"We can in a much more dignified manor get somebody down the stairs onto the ground floor then we could if we had to be carried which really isn't good for the person with the disability or the person doing the carrying," says Prudence Miles of the O.S.U. Office of Affirmative Action.

Miles says they would like to get one for every major building on campus someday.
