Phillip Miles
Phillip Miles, pastor of Christ Community Church in Conway, was sentenced Monday to three years and two months in prison for smuggling hunting ammunition into Russia.
Houston, former senior pastor of Evangel Cathedral in Spartanburg, hasn't spoken with Phillip since his Feb. 3 arrest.
He has had contact with Phillip through the U.S. Embassy and through Phillip's wife, Lynn.
"The embassy talks to her on a regular basis," he said.
Houston said the U.S. Embassy told him that immediate family could visit Phillip in prison.
"But since then, he sent word to me two times not to come over ... because I'd probably only be able to spend a few minutes with him.He said it wouldn't be worth a trip," Houston said.
Houston said he couldn't believe the news when he heard about Phillip's arrest.
"It's such a minor thing. (Phillip) did it innocently.

Phillip served as associate pastor of Evangel Cathedral for five years. He went on to establish Christ Community Church in Conway 17 years ago.
Phillip has visited and spoken at pastors' conferences in Russia for several years.
The ammunition he was convicted of smuggling into Russia was intended to be a gift for a friend and fellow hunter, Houston said.
"Phillip always takes him a gift. He's been over there about 10 times, and every year he takes him a gift as he goes.So this time, as he was leaving, he wondered what kind of unique gift can I take him?"
Phillip thought about his friend owning a rifle and having a difficult time finding ammunition for it and decided to bring him a box of rifle shells.
Despite his sentence, reports are that Phillip is in good spirits.

A recent editorial on The Moscow Times Web site described Phillip Miles's sentence as unfathomable.
"Perhaps (Phillip) Miles was given such harsh punishment to send a signal to other Western pastors that they are not welcome here, where the Russian Orthodox Church is jealously guarding its flock," according to the editorial.

A prayer meeting for Phillip will be held 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Student Ministries Building beside Evangel Fellowship International Offices at 200 Evangel Road. The event is being organized by the Rev. Randal Langley, senior pastor of Evangel Cathedral, and it is open to the public.
Langley said Phillip has many traits similar to his father.
"Everybody loves Phillip.
...
Langley said Phillip has performed mission work in other places, too.
Langley and others are trusting in God to "move on the hearts" of government officials during Phillip's time of need.
"There are a lot of people who know and love Phillip and want to come together, and we're providing the venue for that to take place," Langley said of the prayer meeting.
