    Phillip Miles

Phillip Miles, pastor of Christ Community Church in Conway, was sentenced Monday to three years and two months in prison for smuggling hunting ammunition into Russia.

Houston, former senior pastor of Evangel Cathedral in Spartanburg, hasn't spoken with Phillip since his Feb. 3 arrest.

He has had contact with Phillip through the U.S. Embassy and through Phillip's wife, Lynn.

"The embassy talks to her on a regular basis," he said.

Houston said the U.S. Embassy told him that immediate family could visit Phillip in prison.

"But since then, he sent word to me two times not to come over ... because I'd probably only be able to spend a few minutes with him.He said it wouldn't be worth a trip," Houston said.

Houston said he couldn't believe the news when he heard about Phillip's arrest.

"It's such a minor thing. (Phillip) did it innocently.
    ...
Phillip served as associate pastor of Evangel Cathedral for five years. He went on to establish Christ Community Church in Conway 17 years ago.

Phillip has visited and spoken at pastors' conferences in Russia for several years.

The ammunition he was convicted of smuggling into Russia was intended to be a gift for a friend and fellow hunter, Houston said.

"Phillip always takes him a gift. He's been over there about 10 times, and every year he takes him a gift as he goes.So this time, as he was leaving, he wondered what kind of unique gift can I take him?"

Phillip thought about his friend owning a rifle and having a difficult time finding ammunition for it and decided to bring him a box of rifle shells.

Despite his sentence, reports are that Phillip is in good spirits.
    ...
A recent editorial on The Moscow Times Web site described Phillip Miles's sentence as unfathomable.

"Perhaps (Phillip) Miles was given such harsh punishment to send a signal to other Western pastors that they are not welcome here, where the Russian Orthodox Church is jealously guarding its flock," according to the editorial.
    ...
A prayer meeting for Phillip will be held 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Student Ministries Building beside Evangel Fellowship International Offices at 200 Evangel Road. The event is being organized by the Rev. Randal Langley, senior pastor of Evangel Cathedral, and it is open to the public.

Langley said Phillip has many traits similar to his father.

    "Everybody loves Phillip.
    ...
Langley said Phillip has performed mission work in other places, too.

Langley and others are trusting in God to "move on the hearts" of government officials during Phillip's time of need.

"There are a lot of people who know and love Phillip and want to come together, and we're providing the venue for that to take place," Langley said of the prayer meeting.

The Moscow City Court reduced Phillip Miles' sentence to 10 months and ruled that he should be freed from custody without serving all of it.Miles, who has been in jail since Feb. 3, will likely be set free Tuesday after the completion of the necessary formalities, his lawyer said, and he will be allowed to leave Russia.

Miles, who listened to the decision from jail via videolink, spread his arms wide and said "Hallelujah!"as the translator explained the ruling.

A pastor at the Christ Community Church in Conway, Miles was convicted in April after security officers at a Moscow airport found a box of .300-caliber cartridges in his luggage.

He repeatedly apologized, saying that the ammunition was for a Russian friend who had recently bought a Winchester rifle and that he did not know bringing such ammunition into the country was illegal.
    ...
Before the ruling was issued, Miles spoke to the three-judge panel, looking tired in gray jacket and his pastor's collar.A court-provided translator struggled to convey his comments and often lost significant parts of it.

A crowd of inmates could be seen in the jail cage surrounding him, waiting wearily for their own proceedings to get under way.

"Please don't destroy my life over one box of hunting bullets," Miles pleaded.

"I have been in prison for five months because of my ignorance of the customs laws," he said.

    Philip Miles

A Moscow court on Monday sentenced a U.S. pastor to spend three years in prison for bringing hunting ammunition into Russia.

Philip Miles, from Conway, S.C., has been in custody since his arrest on Feb. 3.He was arrested several days after customs agents at a Moscow airport found a box of rifle shells in his luggage.

Miles is the son of Bishop Houston Miles, who has been the senior pastor of Evangel Cathedral in Spartanburg for 31 years.Phillip Miles was an associate pastor at Evangel Cathedral for about five years before founding Christ Community Church in 1981.

The court sentenced him to serve three years and two months in prison, with the sentence calculated from his detention date.

Miles has said he brought the ammunition for a friend and he didn't know bringing such ammunition into Russia was illegal.

Miles, dressed in a dark jacket and clerical collar, reacted with overt calm when the sentence was pronounced.

"I'm very disappointed. It's a strange sentence for one box of hunting bullets," he said.

After a formal hearing Friday in Moscow, Pastor Phillip Miles of Christ Community Church will be moved from a temporary airport detainment facility to a prison for the investigation, said David Aylor, Miles' nephew and a Charleston attorney.
    ...
On his way back through the Moscow airport this week, however, Miles was prevented from returning to the United States as Russian authorities questioned him further.
    ...
Because the U.S. Embassy is closely involved in the case, family members are not concerned that any harm will come to Miles in the prison, Aylor said.
