The Littles were also recognized by the Redlands Community Music Association before Friday's concert at the Bowl.

Julie Michaels, Redlands Rotary Club music chairman, said the district-level competition was limited to 10 participants.

It is designed to encourage high school musicians and showcase the wonderful talent that we have in our area, she said.

Students were invited to lunch with the Rotarians at the Masonic Temple before the competition.Local musicians judged the young performers on a point system, selecting the following four finalists:

Ellen Hattis, Smiley librarian, and Julie Michaels, Smiley parent, received the Honorary Service Awards given annually for significant contributions to the betterment of youth in the community.

A parent of Smiley for over five years, Michaels received the Honorary Service Award recognizing a variety of activities.Michaels has served as room parent volunteer, library volunteer program development and coordinator, school newsletter editor for five years, book fair chairman, PTA Past President, National Make a Difference Day project coordinator, and directed two all-school murals in which almost 800 students participated in painting.Michaels is also the newsletter editor for Redlands Educational Partnership (REP) organization.In addition, Michaels is the Children's Music Director for 1st Congregational Church, leading three youth choirs and conducting two youth musicals each year.She is a member of the Rotary Club of Redlands, recently receiving the Rotarian of the Year award, and is the President-Elect of the University of Redlands Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Their daughter Julie Michaels worked at Plymouth Village for seven years, the last four as executive director.Michaels is president this year of the University of Redlands Alumni Association.

It's been fun for Michaels to see her parents reconnect to Redlands via Plymouth Village.

"There's a similarity in feeling with the university and with Plymouth Village," Michaels said.
