A graduate of Columbia Business School, Adam also earned a B.S. degree in bioengineering from University of Pennsylvania.Today he specializes in operations and is learning a wide range of new skills at Booz Allen that will help him determine the specific industry in which to focus.
Career at Booz Allen
"The assignments at Booz Allen continually broaden my expertise," he says."One project that I found engaging involved a client that was attempting to acquire a company that supported the defense industry. They needed help from us in forecasting U.S. defense spending over the next five years so that they could make critical decisions concerning the acquisition."
There was, he admits, a bonus to that project: "It was an opportunity to meet and network with so many people at the firm."Adam interviewed Booz Allen subject matter experts who had government insights to understand defense priorities and help determine whether the client's project budgets were likely to be funded."Booz Allen has an amazing network, from government officials on Capitol Hill to military personnel on the west coast," he says.
That project provided Adam with an education on how the defense budget process works and how defense spending is appropriated."It's exciting to be involved with planes and ships. Most kids build model airplanes when they're growing up, but we worked with the real thing. For weeks, my recreational reading involved military plans, ships, and network communications."
Another project Adam found particularly interesting involved the flavor and fragrance industry."A commercial fragrance can be comprised of hundreds of different scents," he explains, "but contain only a small amount of a few compounds. Our team was tasked to manage the manufacturing complexity of certain scents and help the client determine whether investing in that one extra ingredient was cost-effective."
Work - Life Balance
In addition to a solid grounding in engineering and operations, Adam also developed an understanding of business development, real estate, and marketing while he worked overseas. He was involved in volunteer efforts that strengthened his proficiency and enhanced his outlook on both business and culture.
"One effort I enjoyed while at Columbia was helping to build a library in Afghanistan," he explains."A professor at Columbia was assisting in a teach-the-teacher program in that country, and they wanted to rebuild a library for the government organization that is the equivalent of the U.S. Federal Reserve. But they needed books, especially on monetary policy, banking regulations, and business."
So Adam and his colleagues spearheaded the effort to find more than 300 books and 1,000 periodicals and ship them to the library.

Adam isn't sure what his next accomplishment will involve, but Booz Allen continues to open doors."You work very hard here," he says, "with very long hours.
