Scott Meyers, 37, the sheriff's son, began his career in law enforcement in 1992 working as a Winnebago County Jail corrections officer before becoming a patrol officer, patrol sergeant, and patrol lieutenant.
In addition to overseeing all patrol operations, Meyers' new responsibilities include managing the department's SWAT team, bomb team and a newly created Special Focus Unit, a six-person task force that will be activated this month and will concentrate its efforts in "hot spots" or high-volume crime areas, similar to the Rockford Police Department's M-3 Streets Team.

Sheriff Meyers said the Special Focus Unit is a reincarnation of previous, successful task forces that were eliminated because of budget restraints.

And Meyers, 62, said he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
"I am definitely running again in 2010, and I have every intent of serving my full four years," Meyers said.

Meyers, Fitz and Wagner will receive raises from their annual base lieutenant's salary of $86,872 to a base deputy chief's salary of $102,619.

Sheriff Meyers said the department was able to afford the Dec. 23 promotions, which also include Senior Deputy Dominick Barcellona and Detective Dennis Cox being promoted to sergeants; and senior deputies Jeff Ciaccio and Bob Juanez being promoted to detectives, because several ranking officers retired during the past two years.
