Jeff Meyer, development director for Simon, said the goal is to give Cielo Vista a more modern look.

"We have a gold mine here," he said."We're very happy with the property. The city views this as its premier shopping destination. We want to continue that."

Cielo Vista will get new floor tiles throughout the mall, glass handrails on the upper level, a "warmer" color scheme, new seating areas, better lighting, a glass-panel elevator and new doors for the main entrances, Meyer said.

"We've always been the meat-and- potatoes mall," said Jeff Meyer, development director for mall owner Simon Property Group Inc.

But the community has upgraded - the city boasts an average annual household income of about $65,000, Meyer said - and the mall's two-phase, $100 million redevelopment aims to take them from burger and fries to steak and baked potato.

"I don't think we've kept pace with the changes in the masses up until now," said Meyer, in town Wednesday for the kickoff of Phase I of the redevelopment.

Later this summer, Meyer said, Simon plans to announce a new name for the center to go along with its new look.

Simon expects the two big anchors to attract other tenants, about 50 to 70 of them by the project's end, Meyer said.
