Ben Meyer

After being the first runner-up last year, Ben Meyer came back to win top honors at the 2004 South Dakota Auctioneers Association's Bid Calling Contest held at the South Dakota State Fair.

Meyer, who manages Huron Automotive used car lot across the street from the fairgrounds, beat nine other contestants to win the competition.The previous year he competed with 17 other contestants and came in second.

For winning the contest, Meyer received a plaque and belt buckle.A native of White, Meyer graduated from Deubrook High School in 1997 and from Lake Area Technical School in Watertown in 1999.At the vocational school he majored in marketing, management and sales.After completing his schooling, he moved to Huron in October of 1999 and opened Huron Automotive Services.

Meyer said there was some negativity when he opened the used car lot in Huron."There were some people who didn't think we needed another used car lot in Huron," he said."But we made it work and I'm really positive about the community."As for the auctioneering business, Meyer said: "It's tough to get started in the business.You need to develop some recognition."In the community, Meyer is a board member of the Heartland 4-H Rodeo and member of the chamber's Ringneck Festival Committee.He enjoys hunting and fishing, collecting cars and auctioneering.Meyer said he won't be eligible to enter the contest at next year's State Fair, but will host it, serving as the master of ceremonies."Once you win the contest, you're not able to enter again," he said.He said the auctioneer contest has been a part of the State Fair since 1985.Meyer and his wife, Joy, have one son, Will, 2.
