   "We looked at a number of alternatives, including building a fourth level on the bridge or constructing a single-point urban interchange at the intersection, but they were all eliminated one by one," said Stephen G. Metzer, manager of planning and ecological services for DLZ engineering of Lansing.

   Metzer said MDOT is looking for citizens' suggestions about esthetic upgrades at the bridge, and will hold an open house from 4-8 p.m. June 29 at the Community Arts Building at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. MDOT will accept comments and suggestions about the Woodward/Eight Mile Bridge through July 29.
   
   Metzer said the estimated costs of repairing and upgrading the intersection would be about $5.7 million, plus at least another $125,000 in esthetic upgrades. Metzer said the estimated cost of demolishing the bridge was about $5.9 million, but that figure didn't include "extra costs in time lost to motorists and the impact to local businesses during construction."
