Gary Metzer is taking a hiatus from his job as a civil engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to spend nine months in Bosnia with a NATO peacekeeping unit.

There, Metzer, 34, Stevens Point, will celebrate his 17th year in the Army Reserves and help rebuild streets and buildings destroyed during wartime bombings. In his job as a facility engineer with the Army Reserves, Metzer engineers everything from foxholes to three-story buildings and airfields.

Members of his unit, based in Minneapolis, were told a week ago to pack their bags and settle their affairs for Sunday's departure for the war-torn Balkans. Metzer spent a busy week gathering supplies for his trip, arranging for others to adopt his houseplants and watch over his home, paying bills in advance, buying traveler's checks and buying insurance. The Army offered to pack up his household goods for storage, but Metzer said he preferred to leave things as they are.

"For me, I wanted something the same. I wanted that consistency," he said. "I don't want somebody else to pack up my stuff. I want it where it is." Metzer said he expects to come back to life pretty much as he left it - except a little dustier. Leaving his friends has been tough, he said. They might see some life changes - marriages, births, divorces - in his absence.

"Trying to spend enough time with each friend is the hardest," he said. "You don't have enough time to see everybody." Many of his friends invited him to dinner when they heard he was leaving the country, Metzer said. There wasn't time to accept every invitation, though, he said.

"I've had to say no to a lot of friends, which is hard," he said. "When you say goodbye to someone and give them a hug, it means a lot more."
