   "He always knew he wanted to go to West Point, since the time he was in the third grade," said his brother, Bob Metz. "He never entertained any idea but having a military career and going to West Point."
   
   He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry, and he slowly worked his way up the Army's chain of command.
   
   In the early 1970s, he served as a platoon leader and combat-support company executive officer with the 1st Battalion, 509th Airborne Infantry in Germany and Italy.
   
   He returned closer to home to earn a master's degree in mechanical engineering from N.C. State University in 1980. He then taught engineering at West Point before returning to the infantry in 1984.
   
   By 1987, Metz was commanding the 4th Battalion, 15th Infantry, 194th Armored Brigade. By 1998, he was assigned as the deputy director for Joint Warfighting Capabilities Assessment.
   
   From 2000 to 2001, he served as vice director for Force Structure, Resources and Assessment, analyzing how to improve military efficiency.
   
   In February 2003, he assumed command of the III Corps command unit, based in Fort Hood, Texas. Family members said he works 16-hour days.
