Dorothy "Dottie" Metcalf-Lindenburger might be a hometown girl, but she's anything but ordinary.

She flew above nearly 9,000 other applicants to land her "dream job," as one of 11 people selected in NASA's Astronaut Candidate Class of 2004.

While her graduation today will be followed by months of advanced training, Metcalf-Lindenburger is a mission specialist who will work on the space station's payloads and computers.

Metcalf-Lindenburger is also one of three educator astronauts in her class, part of NASA's initiative to increase student excitement and interest in science.
    ...
Even people who remember her only as a student are not surprised Metcalf-Lindenburger reached her goal.

Rick Jordan was Metcalf-Lindenburger's science teacher at Boltz Junior High School and the advisor for M.E.S.A., an extracurricular math, engineering and science club Metcalf-Lindenburger was in.

Metcalf-Lindenburger is currently on the waiting list to take her first flight into space, but as the youngest astronaut in her class and with slowed space exploration she will likely have to wait a while.

But for as much as Metcalf-Lindenburger has accomplished, there is more to her than being an astronaut.

Moving to Loveland at a young age, she attended Stansberry Elementary School before moving to Fort Collins and going to Boltz and FCHS.

Metcalf-Lindenburger graduated as a valedictorian and honor athlete from FCHS in 1993 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in geology from Washington's Whitman College. She married Jason Metcalf-Lindenburger in 2000 and enjoys competitive running and the outdoors.

But what her mother is most proud of is that she is a compassionate and inspirational person.

As a student at Fort Collins High School, Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger was always taught to reach for the stars. Now she's doing exactly that.

The 1993 Fort Collins High School valedictorian was named Thursday to NASA's Educator Astronaut Program at the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Va.

Metcalf-Lindenburger, now a high school science teacher at Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, Wash., was selected along with 10 other candidates, including two educators, for the space program's 2004 class.

"It's a dream come true," Metcalf-Lindenburger said Thursday at a press conference in Virginia. The 29-year-old was selected for the program from almost 9,000 nominees.
    ...
Metcalf-Lindenburger, whose parents, Joyce and Keith Metcalf, still call Fort Collins home, will report this summer to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
    ...
Metcalf-Lindenburger said she's always been interested in space exploration and even attended Space Camp as a teen, but never quite imagined she would be an astronaut.

"When this big of a dream comes true, it's unreal," she said.
