Checks at Estero High School and Pinewoods Elementary are due next week, said Chief Dennis Merrifield of Estero Fire and Rescue District.

Although a sprinkler system still needs to be installed above the stage at Estero High School, Merrifield said inspectors aren't expecting to find any major fire code violations at the school.

At Bonita Middle School, however, inspectors discovered a "major problem" above corridors designed to contain fires, keeping them from spreading into classrooms, said Davenport.

Piping and utilities in the ceiling above the corridors, and the ceilings themselves, don't incorporate the proper materials needed to prevent fire from spreading overhead.Davenport said that kind of design was likely permissible when the buildings were constructed, but alarms today should ensure that students get out of the building before a corridor ceiling fire puts anyone at risk of injury.
