Dr Merrifield, 35, who grew up in Newport but now lives in Cambridge, studied at Archbishop King Middle and Cowes High schools, before graduating in natural sciences at St Catherine's College, Cambridge. He continued his research at University College, London, and in Oregon and at Yale in the United States. It was while in Oregon, researching the inward movement of vesicles â€" small hollow structures in plants and animals â€" he came up with a solution to problems caused by minute movements conventional light microscopy could not resolve.Dr Merrifield, who builds his own apparatus and is innovative in the use of novel optical devices, used the process of evanescent field microscopy. This allowed him to obtain stunning images and has opened up a new field of scientific experimentation. At the awards ceremony, it was recognised the films Dr Merrifield makes of his experiments are scientifically important and his subsequent work has seen him become a world leader in his field.
