Breast cancer survivor Kate Merchant tells her story
...
49-year-old Kate Merchant describes herself as an energizer bunny.
She is the Health and Safety Director for the Clark County Red Cross.
She teaches safety classes like CPR, helping people save lives but now, she's working tirelessly to save her own.
"It almost seems surreal that I'm a cancer survivor. Because it was never in the realm of possibilities of things I thought I might have to face as an adult," said Kate Merchant.
Every Monday, she comes to the Cancer Care Center for her weekly chemotherapy treatment.
It's a place she both loves and hates coming to.
"It's a pain in the butt. You sit here hooked up to this thing, they jab a needle in you. That's not fun.
But that's not so horrible when you think about how really fortunate I am," she said.
...
Side effects that have tried to side-line Kate from doing things she loves.
She says every day; she has a type of mind fog from the drugs. She has trouble concentrating. She can't read as much as she used to.
She's sleepy and weak.
She has indigestion daily. She feels different on the inside and of course, she looks different on the outside.
...
Meanwhile, so is Kate.
The end is circled on her calendar, her last treatment. But Kate says she's already the winner in this battle.

Kate will be one of thousands of people walking in the Komen Race for the Cure in Louisville this weekend.
