John Merchant (Track, Ô58) has just finished his first year of retirement after having practiced orthodontics for 44 years. Says heÕs not as efficient as he was when he was working (who wants to be efficient when youÕre retired, anyway? - editorÕs observation, not JohnÕs). His time is spent (apparently inefficiently - again, editorÕs observation) with travel, golf and a few (very vague) projects he describes as ÒinterestingÓ (hmmmmm . . . could it be that his Òinteresting projectsÓ are those which involve extricating himself from water hazards and sand traps??). John and his wife usually spend a couple of months in the summer on an island off the coast of Maine; he continues to be involved in Cal athletics (heÕs a member of the Track & Field Steering Committee) and also works on projects at Berkeley High School.

John Merchant (Track, '58) retired from the practice of Orthodontics on January 1, 2005 after 44 years. He and his wife divide their time between the Bay Area and an island in Maine where they spend 2 months each summer. John continues to be involved in Cal athletics (he's a member of the Track & Field Steering Committee). He also works on projects at Berkeley High School and says he plays lots of golf - although, when asked about his handicap and how much it had improved since his retirement, he was more than just a little evasive.
