AWS 900 and John Merchant Behind Another Hit Record
    ...
For engineer and producer John Merchant, the Solid State Logic AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System was indispensable in the creation of Guilty Pleasures at two critical stages of the process,Streisand's vocal overdubs and mixing.SSL's most popular console ever, the AWS 900 is a proven hit-maker for the top engineers and producers who recognize the dual benefits of the console's SuperAnalogueƔ signal path coupled with a comprehensive DAW controller.

Basic tracks for Guilty Pleasures were recorded through the SSL 9000 J Series console in Studio A at the Hit Factory/Criteria in Miami, with overdubs recorded to Pro Tools at the Bee Gees' Middle Ear Studios, where Merchant served as chief engineer for more than 10 years.

"Barbra really wanted to do her vocals at home," said Merchant.
    ...
"I'd had a demo on the AWS 900 at GC Pro and really liked it," Merchant recalled."It's very intuitive.
    ...
"Usually, I'd spend a day on the mix and then Barry would come in," Merchant explained.
    ...
"Because of its size and portability," said Merchant, "it went in a flight case and was here the next day.We set it up, and there was that great sound we had gotten used to for three weeks in California. So the album was mixed on the AWS 900, too."

Engineer/producer John Merchant used a Solid State Logic AWS 900 console for vocal overdubs on Barbra Streisand's hit album Guilty Pleasures, recorded at the artist's home.

Merchant used the same AWS 900, rented from Advanced Audio, to mix the album.

"There were no clues that this was going on, it's devastating," said Bee Gees recording engineer, John Merchant, Sunday morning from the brothers' Miami Beach recording studio, Middle Ear.

With more than 500 cover versions of their songs in existence - more than any pop group save The Beatles - artists ranging from Elvis Presley to Janis Joplin and from Barbra Streisand to Destiny's Child have recorded one or more of the Bee Gees' songs. The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and have won seven Grammy awards.

AN AFTERNOON WE'LL NEVER FORGET - [Cached Version]
Published on: 1/1/1999    Last Visited: 9/13/2009

Precisely at 12 o'clock we arrive at the Middle Ear Studio in Miami Beach where John Merchant, the Bee Gees' sound engineer welcomes us and invites us in. While we enter John tells us that this is one of the largest studios in Florida and that The Bee Gees are using it since 1980 when Barbra Streisands album 'Guilty' was recorded here being the first album made here. Our tour starts in the control room and John Merchant tells all about the digital console that they have been using for 5 years now. Next he gives us a technical explanation of which I only understand a part but anyway the console has 200 channels and sometimes John uses about 30% of it. Through a wall of glass we see the studio floor. Just like we've seen that on the Keppel Road video. Eagerly we follow John into the other room. Here we can sit down everywhere we like and touch everything and most important: take photos as much as possible. One by one we take a seat behind the keyboard, the drums or we just take a guitar in our hands. It almost feels like sacrilege. John Merchant is watching us and just smiling. He answers all our questions and sometimes he says: 'that I can't tell you, you should ask this to themselves'! Here's a number of the questions we've asked John:

left: John takes all the time to explain everything right: where ever you watch there are countless nice photos on the walls. We: How is it to work with the Bee Gees?

John Merchant: Great synergy of talent.
    ...
John Merchant asks us if we want to see the rest of the building. Of course !!!! Once upstairs we were speechless with amazement. Everywhere on the walls there were framed photos. The walls were covered with photos from top to bottom. John shows us the different rooms.
    ...
The first album John worked on with The Bee Gees was 'One'. Isn't it a pity for John he wasn't with them yet during the 'Fever' period?
    ...
The Dutch BGFC members together with right John Merchant. We follow John to a small area next to this room.
    ...
John is taking a seat behind the huge computer. On the screen he shows us how things work.
    ...
And of course we'd like to thank John Merchant who showed us around the studio for over three hours and patiently answered all our questions.

After 25 Years, Streisand, Gibb Indulge - [Cached Version]
Published on: 12/6/2005    Last Visited: 12/6/2005

Engineer/co-producer John Merchant, who has worked with the Gibb brothers for more than 18 years, assembled an ace band of Miami-based musicians at Criteria Studios to track, followed by overdubs at Gibb's Miami Beach facility, Middle Ear Studio.Gibb and Merchant then met up with Babs to record vocals at her Malibu, Calif., guest cottage, affectionately called Grandma's House.
    ...
Merchant rented a 24-channel SSL AWS900 console, a Pro Tools|HD rig, various mic pre's and found the exact Neumann M49 tube mic that Streisand had used on previous projects.
    ...
Merchant also brought some of his and Gibb's own toys, including the Chandler TG Channel mic pre and Groove Tubes ViPRE tube mic preamp. For the Grandma's House sessions, Merchant recorded from the M49 to the Chandler to Apogee converters into Pro Tools."No EQ, no compression, just flat to tape," he says.
    ...
"It's a great-sounding room with a beautiful piano," Merchant says.
    ...
Merchant mixed the album at Middle Ear, but not on its Neve Capricorn."We recorded at 96k; the Capricorn's maximum sample rate is 20-bit/48k," he says.
