But D.C. United player Devon McTavish - a former James Wood High School and West Virginia University standout - knows the current numbers don't lie.

More school age kids in the area play soccer than any other sport.

In conjunction with the Riverfront Christian School in Front Royal, McTavish, now living in Arlington, came back home to promote the sport he loves to nearly a 100 players comprising the Rams youth soccer teams last Wednesday.

"I'm promoting the sport I love," said the 22-year-old McTavish, a second-year midfielder for D.C. United."It's not as big as football, baseball or basketball, but there are kids that truly have a passion for it."

McTavish spent over an hour at Riverfront - a part of Riverton United Methodist Church - signing autographs, posing for pictures, answering questions and even taking a few shots on goal to the delight of the Rams JV and middle school girls' teams.
    ...
McTavish said being a successful soccer player is more than just being a great athlete.

"Technical ability is a thing that is often overlooked, especially in this area," he said."We don't have a lot of experienced coaches - although it's getting better.A lot of them think athletic ability is enough, but nothing replaces good technique."

McTavish said the difference between high school soccer, collegiate soccer and the pro game is astounding.

"In high school most people just play for fun," McTavish said."The big difference [professionally] is overall technique and athletic ability all over the field. At the pro level if you're not performing you're out of a job. There's a lot more passion."

McTavish then answered a few more questions from the Riverfront players, such as:

As a junior in high school Devon McTavish became ill. It took doctors a number of weeks to correctly diagnose the illness, but eventually he was told that he had Crohn's disease. Eight years later McTavish still lives with Crohn's, but it hasn't stopped him from becoming an established member of both D.C. United and the greater Washington, D.C. community.

McTavish's own plight with the disease has given him added impetus to involve himself with various charitable organizations and initiatives. In the past two years, McTavish has been involved with Patient Services Incorporated (PSI), the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), and has helped to raise money and awareness about soccer goalpost safety following the tragic death of a young soccer player who hailed from his hometown of Winchester, Va.

"It's an organization designed to try and help families who have loved ones that from chronic diseases and don't have enough money to provide healthcare for them -- don't have enough money to buy medication or for doctors visits," said McTavish about PSI. "It's a great organization. I have Crohn's disease and I constantly have to have medication and have to go the doctor, so I think I make a good spokesman for them."

As a sufferer of Crohn's disease, the CCFA is of obvious importance to McTavish and it is perhaps with them that he has become most involved.

"I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in high school," said McTavish. "It's a growing problem and they're doing research on it and haven't really found a cure for it. I teamed up with CCFA and started getting more involved with the organization and last year I threw a birthday party. It was my 24th and it was on 08-08-08, so I figured I had to throw a party for that one. I charged some money at the door and all the proceeds went to CCFA."

McTavish is not saving his humanitarian contributions strictly for annual celebrations. CCFA will be hosting a night at RFK Stadium this season to further raise money and awareness.

"Certain kids will be chosen and provided tickets and they'll have food set up at the stadium and they will be educated about Crohn's and Colitis and how the organization (CCFA) is trying to help those who have been diagnosed with it," said McTavish.

It was McTavish's willingness to involve himself -- and his club -- in community matters that saw the West Virginia University product reach out to a local family who had tragically lost a son.

"He was playing soccer on a local field in my hometown. He was playing in goal and randomly the goal fell on him and killed him instantly," said McTavish. "They set up a foundation to raise money and awareness and they have camps. I've been out there and brought my family there and kind of become a little bit closer to his family. McTavish continues to raise awareness on that subject.

When you look at the time commitment that McTavish gives off the field it might seem surprising that McTavish has made such huge strides on the field as well. When asked about his progress as a player he reveals the same modesty which shows up when he is away from the field.

"Everybody's got a different path ... but I got to where I wanted to go, so I was happy," McTavish said about his somewhat quiet collegiate career.
    ...
McTavish proceeded to claim a roster spot with D.C. and has gone on to become a first team regular in his second and third MLS seasons.

McTavish, who has 54 career league appearances with United, said that the real secret to his development has been to associate with the right kind of people.

"I surrounded myself with some good individuals, some good veteran players like Ben Olsen, Greg Vanney and Brian Namoff," said McTavish.
    ...
In addition to his already extensive list of affiliations, McTavish will also serve as Honorary Chair of the National Capital Area Take Steps Walk in 2009.

Having grown-up in Winchester, D.C. United's Devon McTavish was particularly affected by the news of Hayden's death. McTavish -- April's MLS W.O.R.K.S. Player of the Month -- reached out to the Ellias family and brought them to RFK Stadium to see his D.C. United team defeat Toronto FC 4-1 in the 2007 season.

McTavish has also given his support to the Hayden Barnes Ellias Memorial Fund, attending the HBE Free Soccer Camps and enlisting the services of D.C. United to help distribute soccer goal safety flyers.

2008: In a season that saw a host of lineup changes from the previous year, McTavish was again one of the most versatile players on the squad. The third-year player began the year as a right midfielder and scored three goals in the team's first two Champions' Cup games. As injuries decimated the team, he was then used as a central back, defensive midfielder and right midfielder. He finished the League season with a goal and four assists in 26 games (25 starts). In all competitions, McTavish tallied four goals and five assists in 42 games (40 starts).

2007: After a rookie season that saw him play just 265 minutes, McTavish made giant strides during his second year. The Winchester, Virginia native made 22 appearances (20 starts) and totaled 1,825 minutes on the pitch as one of the most adaptable players on the team. Used primarily as a center back, McTavish also played at various times as an outside defender, defensive midfielder and outside winger. He was an important part of a defense that allowed just 34 goals in 30 games - third fewest in MLS.

2006: McTavish made five first-team appearances (three starts) in 2006, logging a total of 265 minutes on the pitch. He made his MLS debut on 6/21, coming on as a second-half sub in the team's 1-0 win over Chicago. He earned his first MLS start on 6/24 in United's 1-0 win over Kansas City. His time was limited when he had surgery to remove a portion of his meniscus on 7/27. McTavish also contributed to the reserve team, making eight appearances (seven starts), as the team put together a 6-5-1 record.

College 2005: Following his senior season at West Virginia University, McTavish was named to the NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Third Team. He was also a recipient of one of the 2006 Big East Male Scholar Athlete awards. He finished his career ranked third all-time in school history with 75 matches played as a Mountaineer.

2004: As a junior, McTavish played in 20 total games (19 starts). He scored two goals in WVU's 5-0 win against Mount St. Mary's, scored the game-winner against Villanova in WVU's 1-0 win and another game-winning goal against St. John's to give WVU its first berth into the Big East semi-finals.

2003: During his sophomore campaign, McTavish started 16 of the 17 matches he saw time in. He finished second on the team in scoring, recording five goals and two assists. He scored the game-winner against St. Francis and scored two goals against Pittsburgh.

2002: McTavish started in 14 of 15 games as a freshman.
