MSU Trustee Colleen McNamara said Oakland University officials are attempting to become the state's fourth research university, joining MSU, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
'Oakland is very savvy about how they pushed and looked at what the top three universities have,' McNamara said. 'They're being aggressive. This is all my speculation, it is not fact.
'It's what I've been thinking for the last year that Oakland has been up to.'
Other than making the MSU Board of Trustees discussion 'simpler' in terms of the College of Osteopathic Medicine expansion project, McNamara said the new partnership between Oakland and Beaumont won't really affect MSU.
'They were looking for a medical school because they want to be considered a research university,' she said. 'Oakland's proposal was not what we asked for , a sharing of our medical school.
