McMurtrie has been active in rodeo since she was a kid being named Rodeo Sweetheart, Rodeo Princess, Rodeo Queen and California High School Rodeo District Nine All Around Cowgirl in her hometown of Bishop, California.

However, no matter her rodeo competition victories McMurtrie said the horsemanship win means the most to her.

"In every contest I've ever been in I've won the horsemanship award," she said.
