    Daniel McMurray, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, filed a complaint July 12 regarding George's nomination papers with the Elections Board.McMurray refused to answer questions from the board about whether anyone paid his expenses.McMurray did not immediately return a message left Tuesday.

    Chvala said in his statement that he decided to fund the effort when he was tipped off that George had filed barely more than the 2,000 signatures needed and that hundreds of the signatures appeared to be forgeries.

    He declined to tell the newspaper who brought the issue to his attention, but said it was not a state employee or anyone linked to George's opponents in the Sept. 10 primary.

    The disclosures widened the controversy over whether George's campaign compiled the 2,000 voters' signatures required to be on the fall ballot - and supported the complaint of a University of Wisconsin-Madison student, Daniel McMurray, who formally challenged the accuracy of some of the signatures.

    The state Elections Board was scheduled today to decide whether the veteran Democratic state senator should remain on the fall ballot as a candidate for governor.It will require votes by five of the eight Elections Board members to strike George's name from the ballot, a former board chairman said Wednesday - a vote he suggested was unlikely.

    The Elections Board could also ask state or local prosecutors to begin a criminal investigation of fraud, since forging someone's name is a crime under state law.

    University of Wisconsin-Madison student Daniel McMurray, 21, filed the formal complaint with the state Elections Board to disqualify signatures on George's nomination papers that he alleges are incomplete, questionable, illegible or could not be verified.The board will consider the challenge Thursday.

    McMurray asked the Elections Board to take George off the ballot if removing the questionable names leaves George short of the 2,000 signatures required to run for governor.
