   Marion McMillan, who chairs a long-range planning committee, said Friday "that we just couldn't be more excited about what this opportunity means for Shawnee. It goes along with so many other positives in the community," he said, pointing to the recently approved $22.1 million bond issue for the Shawnee School District as one of them.
   
   The new Early Childhood Center included in the bond issue will be constructed within a block or two of the YMCA.
   
   McMillan, president of BancFirst in Shawnee, is a past member of the YMCA board. He said seven others from the community serve on the long-range planning committee.

   While the initial planning began about year ago, McMillan said that it intensified during the early part of this year.
   
   The campaign's total goal is $9 million and the YMCA board hopes to have the campaign wrapped up by May.
   
   "Construction," McMillan said, "hopefully will begin in 2006."

   McMillan said that a conceptual design and cost estimates have been prepared to help establish the funding amount needed in the capital campaign.
   
   "But these are subject to what construction costs are, and that will be the big driver of what the facility turns out to be," he said.
   
   The $9 million will fund the construction, engineering and design along with equipping the new YMCA that is to be built at its present location along Saratoga Street west of North Kickapoo and east of Airport Road. Part of the $9 million also will be utilized as a maintenance reserve, McMillan said, "to keep up and maintain the facility for years go come."
   
   He said that none of the funds from the $9 million capital campaign will be utilized for the YMCA's annual operational budget. Those funds are derived from the memberships, the programs offered by the organization and being a United Way agency, the allocation provided by it.
   
   The United Way allocation scheduled for calendar year 2006 is $40,000.
   
   McMillan said that each year the YMCA leverages the funds from memberships, which he termed "extremely important," along with those from the programs offered with the United Way money to establish the annual operating budget.
   
   "The YMCA and this new facility is accessible to everybody in the Tri-County area, not just in Shawnee," he said.
