    McKee is a fourth generation Glen Alpine attendee in her family, although she is a second-generation graduate of Freedom since Glen Alpine High School is no longer.For McKee, the opportunities offered to her through scholarships, education and career advancements are pathways similarly chosen by her 408 senior class peers.In 1929 college opportunities were rare only about 1,100 in the U.S. attended a degree-granting institution with the numbers of females being even lower, according to US Department of education National Center for Education statistics.This fall McKee will begin her freshman year at Tusculum in Greenville, Tenn.Majoring in pharmacy, she will also be playing college softball.McKee has been playing sports since third grade, including both volleyball and softball.She plans on six years of college including graduate study and a transfer to Campbell University.She said the most challenging thing for her is meeting new people."I don't know anybody there.There are only five people from North Carolina on campus," she said.McKee can stay in touch through text messaging, which costs only a few cents more than the two-cent stamp in the late 1920s.The softball level will change.And she'll live in the freshman dorm.As far as domestic activities, cooking will be limited to the microwave and she has to learn to do her own laundry.After college McKee plans on working under someone for a year and later running her own business in the pharmaceutical industry.McKee said she wants a family when she has a stable job,"Eventually," she added."It's not a priority right now."McKee is a member of the National Honor Society, Anchor Club and received both an academic and athletic scholarship to attend Tusculum.Exchanging her Patriot red, white and blue for orange and black is exciting, but the most exciting part, she said is to play softball at a higher level.McKee did her senior project on lab-related activities and decided she liked working with medicine best.She's known for a year or two that she would go into pharmacy.
