    Kevin McGregor, Network Analyst with the City of Winnipeg, described the theory, benefits and general operation of the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP is a well-defined protocol which is widely implemented but not well understood. The goal of this presentation was to leave you with a good idea of how and why to implement DHCP in your network environment, whether you manage a home network or a WAN in a large company.

    The meeting also included our usual round-table discussion, plus the vote on the by-lawamendments and the election by acclamation of the newMUUG board of directors.     Kevin McGregor walked through the installation procedure, configuration tuning, and ran a few simple demos of Windows applications.

    Kevin McGregor, of the Manitoba Department of Natural Resources, and Gilbert Detillieux, of the University of Manitoba, demonstrated connecting Windows to Linux using the Samba file server, connecting Linux to a NetWare server as a client using ncpfs, and using Linux as a client and server at the same time.

    Kevin also talked about Intranet services with this configuration, and demonstrated both the Apache web server under Linux, and the web server that is part of Novell's IntraNetWare package.

    We also had a draw for a copy of the newApplixware 4.3 for Linux, courtesy of Red Hat Software, and BRU (Backup & Restore Utility), courtesy of Enhanced Software Technologies, Inc. and SSC, as well as a couple recent copies ofSSC's Linux Journal.     Kevin McGregor, MUUG's own illustrious newsletter editor, presented a whirlwind tour of the best-of-breed games available for your home (or office!) UNIX/Linux system. There were some old stand-bys and classics including X-MAME, the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator, which ran several of everyone's old favourites like Galaga, Asteroids, Frogger, Dig-Dug, and Gravitar. Kevin also talked about some of the more sophisticated game console emulators like the Atari 2600 VCS, and about work that's under way on Sony Playstation, NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64. Also shown or described were strategy games like FreeCiv (a Civilization II derivative) and some of the new 3D games. It was an exciting attempt by Kevin to cram all this into one short presentation.

    Kevin McGregor gave a concise review of his experiences setting up his Red Hat Linux 5.1 system with the Shaw@Home cable Internet service. Most of his troubles and frustrations were not related to Linux, and not even directly related to the cable modem setup, but were Windows setup issues.
