"This work is potentially very interesting and provides a lead for a possible new therapeutic intervention in COPD," Dr Christine McDonald, a respiratory specialist with Melbourne's Austin Hospital, said yesterday. >

Dr McDonald said the prevalence of respiratory-related medical problems was increasing because of Australia's ageing population and would continue to be an important health issue.

Smoking was also to blame for the high level of respiratory-related illness - the reason why the research was interesting, she said.

In the study, lung fluid samples were taken from 15 smokers and 15 COPD patients. When resveratrol was added to the samples, it cut production of interleukin 8 - a chemical that causes inflammation of the lungs - by 94 per cent in smokers and 88 per cent in COPD patients. But Dr McDonald said that "it is drawing a fairly long bow to suggest that drinking red wine can modify COPD".
