Christian McDonald, a scientific diving safety officer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California in San Diego, takes regular trips to Antarctica for dips below the ice.He described the environment as "reasonably challenging" and explained how divers steadily employed one type of breathing regulator from the early 1970s to the late '80s.At that point, a more modern regulator was adopted widely and has staved off any would-be competition from more technologically advanced designs.

"We use what works," McDonald said.

"I'm not a scientist, but it's very clear threats of overfishing, climate change and what have you, is really impacting the oceans more and more and if we can inspire people to care more about the oceans we may be able to influence some change more in the positive direction," said Christian McDonald, scientific diving safety officer.
