Carol McDonald, RN, PhD (University of Calgary)

Dr. Carol McDonald is an Assistant Professor with the School of Nursing, with a BN (1994) and a PhD (Nursing, 2003) from the University of Calgary.She has further academic qualifications in the practice of group psychotherapy with a Certificate of Competence from the Group Therapy Training Program (Institute of Psychotherapy) (1988, Calgary) and was a faculty member with the Group Therapy Training Program from 1994 to 2005.Prior to her appointment at UVic Dr. McDonald practiced as a mental health nurse-therapist, originally in an in-patient setting and subsequently as the coordinator of an outpatient group therapy program with older adults.

Dr. McDonald's research interests derive from a desire to generate openings to understand the lives of people who are poorly served or understood in the current health care system.In the area of women's health, her research has explored the lives of women in particular contextual locations, including the experience of disclosure for lesbian women, and the experience of pregnancy loss through abortion.Dr. McDonald is connected to the lesbian community through the Victoria Lesbian Senior Care Society where she has been a board member and education chair person.

In addition Dr. McDonald is involved in collaborative research with the Garth Homer Society and the UVic Center on Aging where she is a Michael Smith Associated Researcher.
