Carol McDonald, president of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, said Commissioner of Higher Education Don Brown proposed cutting TEG funding 20 percent over the current level.

ICUT, an organization of 40 private schools in Texas, is pressing for maintaining the current funding level, McDonald said.
A more realistic outcome will be a 12.5 percent decrease, McDonald said, the same cut that state agencies are facing.If Brown's proposal to cut the funds 20 percent is approved, 13,000 students will be affected, McDonald said.
"That's an enrollment hit," she said.

McDonald, president of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, said private schools are more concerned about TEG funding because the qualifying guidelines for those grants are more flexible than for Texas Grants.
Students who receive the full TEG amount allowed are not eligible for more money under the Texas Grants program.
Despite the high cost of attending a private institution, administrators make it as easy as possible.
