Peter McDonagh, a former director of British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), has been elected chairman of the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF).

Peter McDonagh was born in Berlin and lived there for 20 years, contributing, as a youngster, to the British Forces Broadcasting Service and RIAS Berlin.

With a degree from St John's College, Oxford, he joined BFBS in Singapore in 1971.Since then he has broadcast for it in Cologne, Berlin, Malta, Belize, Brunei, the Falklands, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Belgium, Cyprus, and worldwide on the UK-based BFBS networks.He has also worked as a qualified BBC Radio Training Instructor, and has made and performed in programmes for BBC Radio's 1, 2, and 4, as well as overseas stations such as Radio Television Singapore, the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Station, Radio Jackie in the UK, and many stations in Germany.He recorded the last ever interview with Peter Sellers, exclusively for BFBS.

Peter's address was followed by speeches from two of our most well- known patrons , broadcasters Bob Harris and Ed Stewart , who officially launched Concerto.

Our Chairman of trustees, Peter McDonagh, then welcomed everyone to the new premises and said:"This is an exciting time for the Fund.Technology is moving faster and changing every day and, with this new space and new facilities we will be able to keep pace with that change.We are aiming to put in place a better support network for our agents and over the next few months we'll be expanding the team to accommodate this.This wonderful radio, Concerto, is just the start; we'll continue to look out for what technology has to offer so we can ensure we can bring people completely up to date with accessible formats.

Ms Fiona Fountain, Co-ordinator for the Wireless for the Blind introduced Mr Peter McDonagh, Chairman who then gave a short presentation about the Wireless for the Blind Fund.

Peter then passed the various Trophies to Angus to present to the people present.

Steve Balding, Bittern DX Group chairman, received both trophies on behalf of the club from Radio Society of Great Britain president Angus Annan and BWBF Chairman, Peter McDonagh at a presentation at Sandford Mill Science and Industry Museum, Chelmsford.

Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society generously supported the event, showing visiting amateurs around the venue.Although they hadn't taken part in the event they presented a cheque to Peter McDonagh to support the work of the Fund.

by Howard Lake 16 May 2005 Peter McDonagh, a former director of British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), has been elected chairman of the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF).He succeeds Sir John Wall, who has held the post for 14 years.

Mr McDonagh has been a trustee of BWBF for 12 years.During his nine-year period as director of radio and television at BFBS, Mr McDonagh helped ensure the future of the Fund with nearly £1 million raised from annual appeals.
