   CIMARRON - Flipping over an ace of diamonds, Angel Fire's John McDermott became Cimarron Municipal School District's newest board member.
   
   Saying, "I don't have luck with cards," Heck drew the two of diamonds.
   
   Picking from a deck of cards - a brand new pack that had been shuffled seven times - determined the newest board member when the board vote ended in a tie between McDermott and Cimarron's Wade Heck Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Cimarron Elementary/Middle School.

   Hascall added, "I'm voting for McDermott, in part because of the innovativeness of his ideas."

   Neither Torres, who cast her vote for McDermott, nor Mark Anderson, who cast his for Heck, explained their votes.

   McDermott replied, "So often in organizations, the communication only occurs when there's a problem.

   McDermott said he would like the district to have a swimming pool at one of the schools. "A swimming pool would be a real focus for the community. We get much greater parent involvement if there are items at the schools that become focuses of the community."
   
   Heck said he would like to see improvements in the school parking lots, especially at Cimarron High School.
   
   McDermott resigns from MVHS Governing Council

   McDermott, who has served on the Moreno Valley High School Governing Council for the past 3 years, said, "I have already sent a letter to the council giving them my resignation, effective immediately, if appointed to the board."
   
   He explained that he hoped to get on the CMSD board because it would give him the chance to have an affect on the education of more students than he currently has as a member of the MVHS Governing Council.

   Following the interview process, board members expressed their appreciation to Heck and McDermott for volunteering their services.

   At that time, the board positions currently occupied by Archuleta and McDermott (who will be filling the seat vacated by Nita Jo Bynum) will be up for grabs.
