Alan started his drumming career as a snare drummer with the 182nd Glasgow Boys' Brigade and after that progressed to the Toyota Pipes & Drums under the instruction of Joe Noble.

Alan played with Toyota (later known as City of Glasgow Pipe Band) as a tenor drummer from 1981 until 1993.He then joined Milngavie Pipe Band and assisted with the instruction of their bass section.Alan is currently a sergeant in Strathclyde Police and transferred to the Pipe Band Unit in February, 2005.
