Jim McCullough, Washington State University professor of marketing and director of the school's International Business Institute, says that's it's shocking how woefully unprepared the students are when they enter the program, sometimes not even knowing where certain countries are.In order to get their degrees, they must have a foreign experience, which not only clues them in to cultural practices, but adds to their confidence as well.

He tells of a student who interviewed for a job at Microsoft and was hired because he'd done some course work in Thailand.Even though the job didn't require travel, his international experiences made him more valuable as an employee, McCullough said.

"Obviously we're one of the most trade-dependent states," McCullough said, noting that Boeing relies heavily on international trade and the majority of wheat grown in Eastern Washington is exported.
