MRA's summer baseball schedule continues through the month of June, and Mike McLendon will be in the dugout even though he recently announced he's stepping down.
"I don't think I want to be a head baseball coach right now," said McLendon, "and I'm going to take my career in another direction.
"Sooner or later, you're going to have to decide on which way you're going to go as far as your career," he added."I think football is the way to go for me now. That's what I feel in my heart, and that's what I'm going to do."
For the past four years, McLendon has been the offensive and defensive line coach for the Patriots, who won the Academy AAA Division II state championship in 2004.

"Mike is going to move into that area, and he'll do a great job there. He's done a great job with the offensive and defensive lines, and I feel fortunate to have a coach of his capabilities on my staff."
McLendon, 32, played baseball at Delta State and used his weight room experience as a head football coach at Bayou Academy before coming to Madison. This summer, he'll split time between the baseball field and the weight room, but expect his roles to increase next fall.

"Coach (Allen) Kirk and coach (Jesse) McRight pretty much handle the defense, so that should free Mike up to do a little more game planning on the offense."
McLendon still plans to be involved with MRA baseball, even after they hire the program's third head coach in three years.
