Colin McClatchie, managing director of News International in Scotland and Ireland, wishes us to clarify his position on recent reports in Press Gazette on the circulation of the Scottish Sun.

Although McClatchie was quoted last week as saying to Press Gazette on the Scottish Sun circulation situation, "We are reducing the gap all the time and this, bluntly, is the final push" , this statement was made in a different context in an interview in the Sunday Herald three weeks previously.

McClatchie had not commented on the circulation battle to PG in the past two weeks. He told Press Gazette this week he will not be commenting on the Scottish Sun circulation figures until the April ABC figures are released in May.

Colin McClatchie, general manager of News International in Scotland, also refutes the notion that CD and DVD promotions are "gimmicks", arguing that they are merely the latest example of "added-value" products that have been used to sell newspapers."Offers have been going on since time eternal," he says."Most households in 1930s Britain had a complete collection of Encyclopaedia Britannica, which they got through promotions in papers.Bingo, scratchcards and cheap airline deals have all been used for the same purpose. The only thing that has changed is that people have got CD libraries now, rather than encyclopedias."

McClatchie, whose job is to maximise sales of the Sun, the News Of The World, and The Sunday Times north of the Border, argues that being the first to offer a new product is key to making the most of the money set aside for promotions.Referring to the Sunday Times's The Month CD-Rom offer, he says: "Being first usually gives you a lift and while I can't tell you how much to date this has cost us, I know it has worked. It fits very well with our Culture section and nobody has got remotely near us in terms of that tech nology. It is the next generation of offer in that it represents a bridge between print and new media, which is useful for getting less print-biased people into the habit of reading newspapers."

McClatchie, who has pledged that the Scottish Sun's circulation will overtake the Daily Record's by 2007, seems unperturbed by the fact that both newspapers are seeing sales decline by the month (see below).

He is also intent on seeing The News of the World erode the Sunday Mail's grip in Scotland's Sunday red-top market: two Starsky And Hutch CDs were used to good effect last month.McClatchie says: "It is a moving target.

Cut-price Star is Scottish hit after passing 100k... - [Cached Version]

Colin McClatchie, general manager of News International in Scotland, said the Star's 10p cover price was having a direct affect on the Sun's Scottish sales. He said: "We normally see our figures pull up sharply in January and, while we are putting on sales, we are not putting on as many copies as we usually do.That is definitely down to the cut-price Star."

The Star, which was selling 62,444 copies in December, according to trade estimates, has seen its circulation rise sharply since the turn of the year.McClatchie added: "[The 10p cover price] is a smart move on their part because they put the price up 5p at the same time in the rest of the UK.
