Cambus manager Brian McClatchey says that a $160,000 to $170,000 budget shortfall on fuel could cause the service to curtail the frequency of some routes.

McClatchey says a decision on whether to make the service cuts and when to make them has yet to be made.

McClatchey says diesel fuel costs jumped from 6 percent of the transit budget to about 25 percent currently.

The inevitable blizzards and other bad weather conditions can cause Cambus schedules to become erratic, said Cambus manager Brian McClatchey. It's smart for students to prepare early to take a Cambus on those days because of overcrowding and varied route times.

"On those days, if you wait for the last bus to get you to your class on time, you may be in trouble," McClatchey said.

Bionic bus, a small division of Cambus, caters to students with disabilities, providing door-to-door service and specialized schedules.Disabled students can call Cambus at 335-7595 to schedule exclusive rides.

Cambus manager Brian McClatchey said he didn't think drivers should fear for their safety, but some concerns are warranted.

"(But) it would be a different experience for Iowa City transit drivers than Cambus drivers because they're full time or part time, not college students who are part time temporary," he said."Most every Cambus driver has driven a late route and has familiarity of what's it like and what to expect."

"The things that will happen is people will get sick, some will get rowdy, and it will be very noisy," McClatchey said.

Cambus manager Brian McClatchey said he thought the late night bus was a good idea but said he also had some reservations.

"If you run until 2 a.m., the reason for doing it is you want to accommodate people who have been drinking downtown," McClatchey said."But when it comes down to spending public resources to accommodate that kind of activity, that's when the problem arises."

He said the public would undoubtedly be concerned about rowdiness and drunken behavior on buses.

"Running it late at night is fine, except for that short period after the bars close because you have a lot of people using it at the same time," he said.
