John McCawley started GatheringPoint Networks, a voice-over-IP service provider, in October 2003.He's well familiar with the connection between the entrepreneur's personality and the company's success.

One problem with (3)Tone was a disconnect between the types of customers Level 3 was targeting vs. the customers the platform was built to support, said John McCawley, president of Gathering Point Networks, one of the sales partners affected by Level 3's decision to cut (3)Tone.

McCawley said Gathering Point, which is based in Denver, targeted small-business clients that needed low barriers of entry and didn't demand a tremendous number of features.But the customers' needs didn't always jive with Level 3's specific platform, he said.

Because of Level 3's announcement McCawley said his company is looking into selling 95 percent of its customer base.

Still, McCawley said Gathering Point will keep 60 percent of its revenue stream because it will continue to maintain and build its large-customer base.

John McCawley, president of Denver-based telecommunications company GatheringPoint Networks, said his five-employee company looked at VC financing early on but didn't find a fit. VC firms seek huge returns that are tough for a service-based business to generate, he said, and they seek to make larger investments than the $250,000 GatheringPoint needed.

McCawley concurred. In the last nine months to a year, he said, he has become "more aware about it [private placements] simply because the funds are available."

"We engaged Huge Partners, knowing full well that we were not attractive to VCs," McCawley said.
