"There are a lot of people that aren't having children, and there are a lot of empty nesters whose kids have left and they make their dogs and cats their No. 1 priority," says Amy McCawley, interior designer and owner of The Livable Home."The pet movement is huge.People have taken it to the level where their pets are part of the family."

The Livable Home sells pet-friendly furnishings online and at a Denver store. Her online sales are higher than her on-site sales, McCawley says, with demand for durable furniture high from pet owners nationwide.

Furniture options at The Livable Home include sofas, chairs and ottomans all made from stain- and soil-resistant fabrics."At first I thought I was the only crazy person who would design my home around my animals," McCawley says. But she soon found out otherwise when she opened her store.

McCawley is in the process of designing a custom home with features just for her three dogs and cat, including a first-floor master bedroom so her aging dogs don't have to walk up stairs, and putting pullout drawers in the kitchen for feeding her pets.

Amy McCawley, interior designer and creator of The Livable Home, developed her commercial-grade furniture line by testing fabrics in her own home, where three dogs and a 20-pound Mane Coon cat reside. Her store now carries 300 stain-resistant fabrics, 80 percent of which are also odor repellent.

"When designing a house or new space," McCawley says, "the most important thing to think about is how the space will be used."
