In the American church (The Episcopal Church in the United States of America or ECUSA) there are four kinds of bishops: the Presiding Bishop (our own Bishop Alexander is a nominee for this office to be determined in an election on June 18 at General Convention), the several diocesan bishops, and assisting bishops called coadjutors and suffragans.
The Presiding Bishop is the chief administrative office of the Episcopal Church; he is elected by the House of Bishops, subject to the approval or disapproval of the House of Deputies, for a term of nine years.
