    enis Matvienko Denis was born on February 23, 1979 in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. From 1989 to 1997, he studied at the Kiev State Choreographic School, where in his last year he made his debut on the stage of National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine as Desire in Sleeping Beauty.

    In June 1997, Denis became the principal ballet-dancer of Ukrainian National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. From March 2001 to March 2002, he was the leading ballet dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. During this time, Denis performed in Don Quixote (as Basil), Jewels by George Balanchine (as Emeralds and Rubies), premieres of Prodigal Son by George Balanchine (as Prodigal Son) and Cinderella by Alexei Ratmansky (as Prince).

    In January 2003, Denis returned to Kiev State Theatre of Opera and Ballet as a principal dancer. Since October 2007, he is a principal dancer with the Mikhailovsky Theatre of St. Petersburg, Russia.

    Denis has been a prize winner at many prestigious international competitions including th Fourth International Ballet Competition in Luxemburg (1997), the Third International Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Competition in Budapest (1998), the Third International Modern Dance and Classical Choreography Competition in Nagoya where he was awarded the Gold Medal and the Vaslav Nijinski Prize, and the Tenth International Moscow Ballet Dancers' and Choreographers' Competition.
