"These are things we've not really had around here and tend to be behind the times," Mattix said.

Mattix said the hope is to have the fieldhouse completed in about two years after ground is broken.

There's excitement at Portage over the impending changes. But everyone will be more excited once all the renovations are completed.

"There's some guarded optimism based on some of the things we've gone through in the past with the building project," Mattix said.

Athletic director Bob Mattix, whose department managed the program until recent years, noted private driving schools in the area charge from $340 to $410, while fees at public schools range from $250 at Valparaiso to $350 in the Duneland Schools.

"We offer the course only in the summer, and priority is given to our own students over those from other districts and to the older students," he said.

He said the costs of the program are a matter of guesswork each year because it's not known until the February registration is over how many students will be taking the course and what their special needs might be.

"We had a girl who couldn't use her leg and completed the course successfully, but we had to spend $1,400 to specially modify a vehicle," Mattix said.

He said the district can schedule up to four sessions a year with a maximum of 96 students in each session, for a capacity of 384 per summer.
    ...
Portage also uses a computerized driving simulator and four sessions on a closed course, without an instructor, to add to students' driving experience in the car, Mattix said.
