   In the news: Claire Matthews recently was named the new executive director at the Mystic Arts Center, the new name for the former Mystic Art Association. She came to the center from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford.
   
   Background: Matthews was director of external affairs at the Wadsworth. While there, she structured and led a major fund-raising campaign and oversaw all fund-raising activities, government relations, marketing and public relations. Before the Wadsworth, Matthews worked at Wesleyan University and Connecticut College. She served as dean of admissions, vice president of planning and finally, vice president of development and alumni.
   
   Job description: For her new position, Matthews will look to "foster the creation, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts through exhibition, education programs and cultural collaborations."

   MYSTIC October 17, 2004 - Claire K. Matthews joined the Mystic Arts Center as Executive Director in September. She came to the Center from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, where she had been Director of External Affairs. At the museum Claire structured and led a major fund-raising campaign. She also oversaw all fund-raising activities, government relations, marketing, public relations, visitor services, and the museum shop.
   
   Prior to the Wadsworth, Claire led a career of increasing responsibility in higher education administration, at both Wesleyan University and Connecticut College, ultimately serving as Dean of Admissions, then Vice President of Planning and finally Vice President of Development and Alumni.
   
   Claire joins the Arts Center enthusiastic about its mission: to foster the creation, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts through exhibitions, education programs and cultural collaborations.
