Our Student Pastor, Michael Mathews, is blogging now.I've read through some of his posts today, and they're pretty good.

    Give 'em a read here.

Pam. [next to Susan - giving Michael a hard time] She's our staff encourager. She's officially our Children's Pastor, which means she is in charge of PowerUp and all kids activities. She was our third full-time hire, and I've often said this was the smartest decision I've ever made (even though I didn't realize it at the time).

Emily. [far left - staring off into space.I think she calls this "being creative".] We initially hired Em part time as a receptionist, but over time we realized her real talents and she realized a career in ministry was right up her alley. She's in charge of all communication materials (including graphics, video, written, verbal, & web) as well as our service programming (planning & executing all elements of our services) and the audio/visual booth & its workers. She has really grown as a leader AND a person, and is coming into her own as a part of our staff.

Justin. [over my left shoulder - he probably just saw something shiny] Where do I start?

Michael hit a home run.We continued our summer sermon series - "Faces of Leadership" - this week by hearing from our Student Pastor, Michael Mathews. He talked about how we should stop making excuses ("get off our but's"), and he had a "but-counter" so we'd know how many times he said it.

If you missed it, last night we ordained Michael Mathews into the ministry. He's now "official" (not that he wasn't before). And I explained this during the service, but I'll repeat it for those of you who couldn't come: Ordination is legal. It confers upon him certain rights and responsibilities from the state. It's ceremonial. It's a time when we, as his church, confirm that we have seen evidence of his call into the ministry. And it's spiritual. We didn't call Michael into the ministry last night - God did before he was born.Just like Jeremiah and Paul before him.

It was an awesome spiritual time of encouraging Michael together. But the cool thing was that I was also very encouraged by what I saw.I thought I'd share some highlights…

The council. The Trustees and I met along with Charles Harkala before the service to encourage and advise Michael on his future in the ministry.
    ...
It was cool to listen to the Trustees as one by one they shared stories of how Michael had challenged and encouraged them over the last few years.
    ...
And the rest of the time was given to the people, to let them encourage and support Michael.
    ...
Michael Mathews has continually impressed me over my 5+ years at RPC, but I've never been more impressed than I was last night. He's a class act. He's a great leader. And like I shared, he's been behind A LOT of the vision and changes that we've made over the years.I'll never forget walking out of NPCC with Michael 3-1/2 years ago and saying "We can't do this", while he replied over and over "Yes, we can Timm. And we should."He's not GOING to be a great leader - he already IS one.

Michael from Oak Leaf had a post today about broken windows that triggered something in my noggin.
    ...
Michael Mathews was the obvious choice, mainly because he's been my go-to guy for several years now. He was pumped at the chance, but after praying about it he felt the timing wasn't right, and we support him on that.

But Michael and Travis did a pretty good job of that already - check it out here and here.
