Michael-Ray Mathews
We welcome longtime Alliance member Reverend Michael-Ray Mathews as the proclaimer in worship on Friday night and are grateful for his leadership.
Michael-Ray is the Director of Outreach and Recruitment for the PICO National Network, a faith-based
network of over 1000 congregations engaged in community organizing in over 150 cities in the United States.
A native of Los Angeles, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences and Communications from the University of Southern California and a Master of Divinity degree from the American Baptist Seminary of the West and the Graduate Theological Union - Berkeley.
Rev. Mathews is a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry degree at the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, Calif.
His dissertation project is an introductory pastoral theology for pastors engaged in faith-based community organizing.
This year, Michael-Ray celebrates twenty-one years of pastoral ministry.
An ordained American Baptist minister, his early ministry leadership experiences began at Trinity Baptist Church - Los Angeles where he served as Assistant Financial Secr etary and Operations Manager.
He has also served as Campus Minister for the American Baptist Campus Ministry at USC; Youth Pastor at Temple Baptist Church - Los Angeles; Minister of Outreach at Beth Eden Baptist Church - Oakland; and Program Associate for Contextual/Field Education at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
Most recently, he served as the senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church of San José, California.
Michael-Ray is married to Dené Murray-Mathews, a telecommunications engineer with AT&T Mobility in Pleasanton, Calif.
