"If hiring decisions are not made in December, (they) have already been made for January," says Rick Mastel, president of Mastel Associates in Calgary.
Job seekers need to be researching companies, attending parties and other social events to network so they are prepared when bosses come back to work and begin hiring almost immediately, says Mastel, a career and business management consultant.
People are also in a better position to take advantage of the relaxed state of mind many of their competing job candidates may be in.You can start by
approaching employers and workers within the organization to get information about its direction, as well as possible opportunities, says Mastel.

Mastel says no matter what the time of the year, it all comes down to the attitude you present to yourself and potential employers.
"If you phone up an employer and you don't have a positive attitude, it doesn't matter if it's January or December -- it's not going to do you any good," says Mastel.
"You have to have that positive attitude, know what you're going to say, and you have to be able to make a case for yourself," he says.
