Dagoberto Martinez - 2005 Employee of the Year
Not many people are dedicated enough to give up personal time for their jobs.CCA employees know that in corrections, long hours and physical and mental challenges are all part of the job. They are accustomed to the 24-hour, sevendays-a-week nature of the business.Dagoberto Martinez, CCA's 2005 Employee of the Year, is known for his extraordinary commitment. His time, energy, and willingness to continually go above and beyond the scope of his position have not only benefited Idaho Correctional Center, his home facility, but also the local community, several other CCA facilities around the country, and CCA as a whole.
Martinez began his career with CCA in June 2000 as a correctional officer at ICC and since then has served as auxiliary officer, housing unit officer, transport officer, parole hearing officer, and his current position of senior correctional officer.
"Dagoberto has been with us since ICC opened," says Warden Jeff Conway.

Martinez pursued a degree in criminal justice and joined CCA to observe the atmosphere in corrections and, as he says, "got hooked.""I like my job because it's never the same thing," says Martinez."Sometimes things can happen on the spur of the moment, and that keeps me on my toes.I like that."Martinez has proven himself to be a very valuable and dedicated employee, giving up his personal time to ensure the success of his facility as well as the success of other CCA facilities."We have a job to do," says Martinez, "but there's a little more we can do that will make the facility run smoother."
Martinez is known for doing a lot more than what is asked of him.He regularly volunteers to represent ICC at community events. He helps train and mentor new employees. He recently volunteered to become the facility disciplinary hearing officer.
In 2004, ICC, with the cooperation and assistance of the Idaho Humane Society, developed a canine adoption project for inmates.Martinez volunteered his time to ensure that the program was a success, even drafting a landscaping plan for the canine training area.
Martinez helps other CCA facilities also. When ICC was asked to send a security team to assist Diamondback Correctional Facility, Martinez agreed to spend four weeks away from friends and family to help.Upon his return, the supervisory staff at Diamondback sent a letter of commendation based on Martinez's excellent performance.
He spent another 30 days at Prairie Correctional Facility in Minnesota, helping transport 300 Idaho inmates to PCF, even though there was a high probability that he would be away from his family through a portion of the holiday season.
"I've learned a lot from everyone at my facility and my coworkers at other CCA facilities," he says.
