Researchers also have found the beetles have a hard time breeding in extreme heat, which could be a concern if it is introduced in the Coachella Valley, said Cynthia Martinez, a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Las Vegas.

"Some subspecies of the beetle react differently to climates.That's something they're trying to figure out," Martinez said.
