Dennis Martinez doesn't have the answers to Bakersfield's quandaries. The problem, he says, is that those in office don't either.

Dennis Martinez, running for mayor of Bakersfield
...
Martinez, 48, said he knows the mayor doesn't have much power, but he has a voice, he said.He would use that voice to bring the governor and the federal government in to help the economy.
"Someone was not minding the store," he said."We have to get everyone back to work.If we don't start now, we'll be worse in four years."
As a child, Martinez spent summers picking crops with his parents.

Martinez started his career as a gardener, then went to school for a landscaping license.Later he got a concrete license and started a company with his two brothers - Martinez Brothers Concrete.Today, he is the sole owner and his company is simply known as MBC.
He does "tilt-up" work, building large concrete structures and then lifting them up into place. Most of his work is commercial - a parking structure in downtown Bakersfield, a Kohl's, a Wal-Mart, from San Diego to San Francisco.
His license is currently suspended because he hadn't paid a bill.He said it was because his bills were still going to his ex-wife.
